In 1992 CCS originated the idea of holding the Independence Games so that young sports people with disabilities could develop their sporting talents. The Independence Games is now a sporting event for young people aged 8-17 years who live with a disability. It is a high quality sporting tournament run over two days.
The Independence Games celebrates success, courage, determination and FUN!
It is a Games for everyone. It is for all athletes to be part of no matter what their disability/ability.
Athletes come with their own personal goals. For some athletes, the goal is serious competition, with dreams of one day representing New Zealand at Paralympics. For others, the goal is to participate in sporting opportunities that they do not have the chance to pursue alone. All are welcome.
Sporting events are well organised with the help of local sports clubs. There are lots of activities including opening and closing ceremonies, "Have a Go" and social events.
The Independence Games is a skilful, power-packed event that moves spectators to cheer themselves hoarse!
